Firm Profile

The firm has been in the Petoskey area for over 30 years. We provide accounting, audit, tax, bookkeeping and management advisory services for a variety of clients. Accounting and audit services encompass audits, reviews and compilations of financial statements. Tax services include business, personal and estate tax planning and return preparation. The management advisory services provided by our firm are diverse and include such services as business valuations, litigation support, and assistance with buying, selling and transferring a business. We are also able to provide computer consulting services, including software installation and support.

The firm’s client base is diversified and includes governmental entities, nonprofit organizations, manufacturers, construction companies, professional corporations, retailers, social clubs, condominium associations, and visitors bureaus.

The firm is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), including its Taxation Section, and the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants. As an AICPA member, we are required to participate in a practice-monitoring program which provides, in effect, an audit of the auditors. We received an unqualified opinion from our most recent review, which was completed in December, 2006.

PROFESSIONAL STAFF BIOGRAPHIES

The following are biographies of the professional staff members of our firm:

Janice W. Smolinski, CPA

Before joining Smolinski & Christman, P.C., Janice worked in the audit department of the New York office of KPMG Peat Marwick, an international public accounting firm. She has a variety of experience that includes, closely held entities, nonprofit entities, construction and manufacturing companies. Business valuation, estate planning, and litigation support are among the consulting services she provides.

Janice obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with a major in accounting from Montana State University. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants and past President of the Estate Planning Council.

Community activities include past President of Zonta Club of Petoskey, the Women’s Resource Center, and of the Hospice of Little Traverse Bay and former member of the Emmet County Zoning Variance Board and Northern Michigan Hospital Foundation Board. She is currently on the Investment Committee for the Diocese of Gaylord, and the Finance Council for St. Francis Xavier Church.

Kevin R. Christman, CPA

Kevin Christman is a principal in the firm of Smolinski & Christman, P.C. and has been a member of the firm for twenty two years. Kevin supervises several of the audit engagements performed by our firm. He is also responsible for a variety of accounting and tax engagements.

Kevin graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Business with a major in accounting. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants.

Kevin is currently the Treasurer of the YMCA of Northern Michigan. He is also a Past President of the Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce. Kevin also is a member of the Rotary Club of Petoskey.

Mona C. O’Neil, CPA

Mona O’Neil is a principal in the firm of Smolinski & Christman, P.C. and has over twenty five years of experience in public accounting. Mona has been a member of Smolinski & Christman, P.C. for twenty two years. She has experience in a variety of accounting and tax engagements.

Mona graduated with honors from Lake Superior State University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in accounting. She is Treasurer of the Petoskey Education Foundation and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants.

Daniel D. Rasmussen, CPA

Dan Rasmussen is a principal and managing partner of Smolinski & Christman, P.C. and has over eighteen years of experience in public accounting. Dan has been a member of the firm for twelve years. Before joining the firm, Dan worked in the tax department of the Grand Rapids office of Ernst & Young LLP, an international public accounting firm. His experience includes individual and closely-held entity tax planning and preparation. Dan heads up our Business Valuation practice and also supervises and maintains our computer systems and has experience with a variety of software applications.

Dan graduated with honors from Michigan State University with a Masters Degree in Business Administration and Professional Accounting with an emphasis in Taxation. His Bachelor of Arts Degree is in Accounting. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants.

Dan is Committee Chair for the SFX Troop 7 Boy Scouts, and is Treasurer of the Cross Village Rug Works, Top of the State Michigan State Alumni Club, and a new nonprofit organization serving cancer patients, Beautiful Survivor, Dan is also a past President of the Sunrise Rotary Club of Petoskey, former Treasurer of the Petoskey Education Foundation, and spent ten years managing baseball teams within the Petoskey Little League.

Ted M. Teller, CPA

Ted Teller is a principal in the firm of Smolinski & Christman, P.C. He has been a member of Smolinski & Christman, P.C. for sixteen years. Ted has experience in a variety of audit, accounting and tax engagements. He has expertise in audits of nonprofit and governmental entities and currently supervises the audits of several of these entities performed by our firm.

Ted graduated with honors from Lake Superior State University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in accounting. Ted is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants.

Ted is a past president and current board member of the Kiwanis Club of Petoskey, is a member of the Board of Deacons of Landmark Baptist Church, and serves as a board member of the Manna Food Project and Northern Michigan Community Mediation.

Adam B. Caron, CPA

Adam Caron has been a member of the staff of Smolinski & Christman, P.C. for ten years. Before joining the firm, he worked as an accountant in industry.

Adam graduated from Lake Superior State University with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting Degree and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants.

Adam serves on the Board of Directors for the Little Traverse Association of Home Builders.

Troy A. Slater, CPA

Troy Slater has been a member of the staff of Smolinski & Christman, P.C. for nine years. Before joining the firm, he worked in the Grand Rapids office of Ernst & Young, LLP as a billing coordinator. Troy also worked as a senior auditor for Rehmann Robson, a regional public accounting firm. While there, he was in charge of several city, school and employee benefit plan audits.

Troy graduated with honors from Ferris State University with a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy Degree and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. and the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants.

Troy serves on the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army of Petoskey.

Hyangsook P. “Sookie” Ostrander, CPA

Sookie Ostrander has been a member of the staff of Smolinski & Christman, P.C. for two years. Sookie joined the firm in August of 2007 after obtaining her degree in accounting from Saginaw Valley State University. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants.
